1.What is the NDIS?

NDIS stands for the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

This insurance scheme can be accessed across all states and territories of Australia. As an insurance scheme, the NDIS is designed to give peace of mind to individuals and families that people with permanent and significant disability can access supports and services they need to improve their independence and skills over time.

In the NDIS model there is great focus on enabling individuals and their families to exercise choice and control over services and supports they need and how they want them provided.

Supports through the NDIS are provided to eligible participants with physical, intellectual, sensory, cognitive and psycho social disability, as well as children with developmental delay.


2.What is the NDIA?

NDIA stands for National Disability Insurance Agency.

The role of the NDIA is to implement the NDIS and to make it work in four ways briefly outlined below.

  • Helps people with disabilities by informing and empowering them to be confident consumers of supports, who are able to exercise choice and control.

  • Promotes inclusion and easy access to mainstream supports, community activities and government initiatives for people with disabilities. This is done by raising and strengthening community awareness.

  • Provides service providers like Welcome Care Services and others with clarity so they can better grow their businesses and have the capability to provide safe high-quality supports, delivered in a compassionate way.

  • Provides information and referrals/links, to services and activities. In addition the NDIA develops your NDIS plans to address reasonable and necessary supports.


3.What is the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission?

This is an independent agency established to improve safety and quality of NDIS supports and services. This organisation operates across Australia and roles performed by the NDIS quality and safeguards commission includes the following.

  • Regulate NDIS providers

  • Promote safety and quality of services and supports

  • Identify areas for continuous improvement

  • Resolve problems that may arise
